Welcome to “Trust Me, I’m Your Trustee,” dispatches from the life of a poet turned politician. Well, that’s not an entirely accurate way of describing what’s happened. I’m still a poet. But on April 1st, I was elected to a 6 year term on the Rock Valley College Board of Trustees, earning 18,424 votes over 6 counties in the Northern Illinois region, which was the 2nd most votes earned in the field of 5 candidates (that’s a lot of numbers). I’ll use this space to chronicle the challenges and successes, questions and confusions, and general ups and downs of being an unlikely elected official in my adopted hometown of Rockford, Illinois.
